What Are Self Levelling Compounds?
Self levelling compounds typically comprise a blend of super fine fillers, cements, and latex polymers which give them extra strength and flexibility.
Self levelling compounds can be applied in very thin layers to level floors in preparation for a wide range of final floor coverings including wood flooring, ceramic tiles and vinyl.
They are referred to as self levelling, as the action of gravity alone causes them to even out, unlike liquid screeds which need to be agitated with the use of dapple bars.
Advantages
Smoother finish: self levelling compounds provide a smooth base for any final floor covering. They achieve an SR1 finish, which is the highest standard for surface regularity, compared with SR2 finishes for liquid screeds and SR3 finishes for sand and cement screeds.
Extra thin sections: self levelling compounds can be laid at a minimum depth of 2-3mm, compared with 15-20mm for liquid screeds.
Fast setting: self levelling compounds require minimal water content due to the addition of polymers, which results in significantly reduced drying times. Floors can be dry within a matter of hours compared to weeks with liquid or sand and cement screeds.
Hygienic: self levelling compounds are generally protein-free which makes them ideal for projects demanding high levels of hygiene such as hospitals, laboratories, and food manufacturing facilities.
Self Levelling Compounds vs Liquid Screeds
Self levelling compounds are generally bagged products which are mixed onsite, whereas liquid screeds are mixed at specialised batching plants and transported to site via mixer trucks.
The choice between liquid screed or self levelling compound comes down to the specifics of a project. Liquid screeds are better suited when greater depths are required, for instance where minimum coverage is needed over underfloor heating systems.
Self levelling compounds on the other hand are perfect for thinner sections and when superior finishes are required for specific floor coverings.
